Bella is a specialist hired to help realise the director’s and actors’ intimacy vision while supporting the performers’ and production’s physical and emotional safety. Bella is trained in consent and trauma-informed practices.

WHEN DO YOU NEED TO HIRE AN INTIMACY COORDINATOR?

If your production includes scenes involving nudity and/or simulated sex requiring nudity riders, an intimacy coordinator (IC) should be present. An IC is also recommended for scenes of intimacy that may not require a rider, such as kissing, implied nudity or familial intimacy.

The need for an IC may depend on factors such as a performer’s age, experience, or comfort level. Productions involving vulnerable or sensitive subject matter should also consider working with an IC. Furthermore, ICs can help mitigate power imbalances surrounding intimate scenes and support productions to run safely and smoothly.

ICs should be bought in during pre-production. The job requires the same amount of time as any other department head and will allow the IC to establish a collaborative relationship with the project and gauge its specific needs.

Bella is a creative specialising in intimacy choreography and storytelling, hired to help realise the director’s and actors’ intimacy vision whilst also sharing safety responsibilities with others on the production. Bella is trained in consent and trauma-informed practices.

THE INTIMACY DIRECTOR’S ROLE INCLUDES:

  • Consultation - I can help in the casting and contracting stages for roles with high-risk intimacy.

  • Intimacy Research and Dramaturgy

  • Intimacy Choreography - I create intimacy choreography with the actors, coach the actors’ movements within the intimacy scene and adjust the intimacy staging for various spaces, sets, costumes, and lighting.

  • Health & Safety - I advocate for the performers and the creative and production team, manage communication and conflicts, offer protocols and assess risk, offer creative staging solutions and can provide performer after care.
